Mersiha Velic, Dental Hygienist, Master in Oral Health Sciences, PhD student, Department of Health Sciences, Karlstad University and Ulrika Lindmark, Professor of Oral Health Sciences, Karlstad University received the Eklund Foundation grant of €112,560 in 2024. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the grant and your project “Comprehensive Assessment of Resilience and Early Childhood Dental health in 6-year-olds (CARE-Kids) – views from parents in vulnerable areas“.

What does this grant mean to your research?
We are very grateful for the opportunity and the trust to conduct our study, and this grant is immensely valuable for our CARE-Kids project. It provides the necessary funding for comprehensive research, including in-depth interviews and data analysis. The grant also allows for collaboration with experts and access to advanced research resources in the field of research.
What are you studying?
By interviewing parents of caries-free children born in 2018 (N= 15-12), the study aims to explore various protective factors from a family perspective to better understand why some children do not develop caries.
What is the aim of the study?
The main objective of the CARE-Kids project is to identify and examine factors that protect children from developing early childhood caries (ECC) despite living in high-risk areas. Additionally, using a salutogenic approach, the study aims to understand how family dynamics and living context act as protective factors. This information can be used to develop oral health-promoting strategies through a family-focused approach.
