Maria Pigg, Associate Professor, Department of Endodontics at the Faculty of Odontology at Malmö University received Eklund Foundation scholarship of 150 000 SEK in December. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the grant and your project “Placebo in Orofacial Pain Diagnosis”

What does this grant mean to your research?

It means a lot, now I have funds to cover all lab materials to conduct the research as well as costs associated with publication and international presentation of the findings, which is important.

What are you studying?

Unspecific effects, or placebo effects, are well known to impact the outcome of treatment for a variety of diseases and disorders. I am now studying how the placebo effect may affect also the outcome of diagnostic procedures.

What is the aim with the study?

The aims are to first identify which factors contribute to the placebo effect in diagnostics, and subsequently to develop a procedure which controls for these factors and eliminates the placebo effect as much as possible, which hopefully makes the diagnostic outcome more reliable.

Thank you for the interview! It will be very interesting to follow your research.

The Eklund Foundation scholarship was instituted to promote odontological research with a focus on oral health at the Faculty of Odontology at Malmö University. It has been distributed by the Eklund Foundation since 2017.
